A nurse. A mother. A servant leader. A woman of faith. The life whose love, service and quiet faithfulness became the foundation upon which this movement was built.
Her Life
A life of quiet, faithful service.
Sr. Elizabeth Funie Shabalala lived with a rare combination of gentleness and strength. Her presence settled rooms. Her words carried wisdom. Her care made people feel seen before they were treated, advised or corrected.
She served in nursing for more than four decades — from Enrolled Nurse to Professional Nurse and Nurse Practitioner — with qualifications in general nursing, psychiatric nursing, community nursing, midwifery and district health management. Her deepest qualification was the love with which she cared.
To her family she was a mother, protector, counselor and unwavering source of belonging. She raised her children with prayer, discipline and grace, and — with her husband Titus — lovingly raised her grandson Siyabonga Neo after the loss of her firstborn Thembisile Bridgette in 2010.
She was a queen without a crown.
She loved without conditions, forgave without keeping score and served without seeking recognition. She believed people could change. She believed every life mattered.
