SR. ELIZABETH FUNIE SHABALALA

16 July 1959 – 14 October 2025

A Nurse. A Mother. A Servant Leader. A Woman of Faith.

Her Story

A life remembered with tenderness and honor.

Sr. Elizabeth Funie Shabalala lived with a rare combination of gentleness and strength. She was the kind of woman whose presence settled a room, whose words carried wisdom, and whose care made people feel seen before they were treated, advised or corrected.

Her story is not only a record of dates and professional milestones. It is the story of a woman who gave herself fully to the people entrusted to her: patients, children, relatives, neighbors, colleagues and every person who needed compassion at the right time.

Sr. Elizabeth Funie Shabalala — Her Story

Rooted in dignity, family and quiet resilience.

Born on 16 July 1959, Elizabeth Funie Shabalala grew into a woman shaped by humility, responsibility and deep respect for human life. Her early years formed the values that would guide her through motherhood, leadership and service.

She carried her beginnings with grace. Nothing about her was loud or performative; her life spoke through consistency, prayer, presence and the everyday discipline of doing what was right even when no one was watching.

More than four decades of healing service.

In 1983, Sr. Elizabeth began her nursing career, answering a call that would become one of the central expressions of her life. From 1983 to 2025, she served with professional excellence and uncommon compassion.

Her progression from Enrolled Nurse to Professional Nurseand Nurse Practitioner reflected both skill and devotion. She held qualifications in general nursing, psychiatric nursing, community nursing, midwifery and district health management, but her deepest qualification was the love with which she cared.

Family, Motherhood & the Heart of Her Legacy

A mother whose love became a home.

To her family, Sr. Elizabeth Funie Shabalala was more than an accomplished professional. She was a mother, protector, counselor, encourager and unwavering source of belonging. Her love was practical and intentional — expressed through prayer, meals, wisdom, correction, sacrifice and presence.

She was the kind of woman who believed that every person deserved another chance. She did not judge people by race, nationality, status or past mistakes. She believed in the dignity of every human being and often reminded those around her that growth is only possible when people are given room to learn, heal and begin again.

Elizabeth believed deeply in forgiveness. She taught that life was too precious to be wasted carrying bitterness. One of her most repeated lessons was simple: there is no value in crying over what cannot be changed. Once the milk is spilled, it is spilled. Instead of dwelling on yesterday, she chose to focus on what could still be done today.

Thembisile Bridgette Shabalala(1983 – 2010)

One of the deepest sorrows of her life was the loss of her firstborn daughter, who passed away on 30 October 2010. The loss shattered her heart, yet she carried that grief with remarkable faith, strength and dignity for the rest of her life.

At the time of Thembisile’s passing, her son, Siyabonga Neo Shabalala, was only ten months old. Elizabeth and her husband, Titus Ndabezweni Shabalala, lovingly raised him as their own, ensuring that he would always know the love, identity and legacy of the mother he lost far too soon.

Her motherhood extended beyond biology. Family members, neighbors, patients, friends and strangers alike found comfort in her presence. She had a rare ability to make people feel seen, valued and safe.

To her children, she was the first example of unconditional love. She protected fiercely, loved generously and taught by example. Her values became the foundation upon which generations would build.

Today, her legacy continues through her children, her grandson Siyabonga Neo Shabalala, her granddaughters, her extended family and every life she touched.

The Founder’s Reflection

Queen Without a Crown

The EF Legacy of Purpose Foundation was inspired by the life and legacy of Sr. Elizabeth Funie Shabalala.

Her daughter, Nokulunga Sweetness Shabalala, founded this movement in honor of the woman who taught her that service is love in action. The Foundation was born from a desire to ensure that Elizabeth’s compassion, wisdom, faith and commitment to people would continue long after her earthly journey ended.

The reason this Foundation exists is simple: I could not allow my mother’s service to end with her passing. If she could no longer serve the world with her own hands, then her legacy would continue through mine. The values she lived by — love, forgiveness, compassion, faith and service — became the foundation upon which this movement was built.

She was a queen without a crown.

She loved without conditions, forgave without keeping score and served without seeking recognition. She believed people could change. She believed every life mattered. She believed that kindness, dignity and grace could transform a person more effectively than judgment ever could.

She taught me that people are imperfect and that grace matters. She believed in second chances, in forgiveness, and in seeing the humanity in every person. She did not judge people by race, nationality, status or past mistakes. She believed every life carried value and that love should always be greater than judgment.

She taught me not to waste life grieving what cannot be changed. One of her simplest lessons became one of her greatest: once the milk is spilled, it is spilled. Rather than dwelling on yesterday, she chose to focus on what could still be done today. That spirit of resilience, acceptance and hope shaped the way she lived and the way she loved.

The values that shaped her life now shape this Foundation. Through every act of service, every person helped, every family strengthened and every life restored, her legacy continues.

Though she is no longer physically present, her influence remains alive in the work, the mission and the people she inspired.

This is more than a memorial. It is a continuation of her life’s work.

Her story continues. Her love continues. Her legacy continues.

Faith and Values

Faith was the center from which she served.

Her faith was not separate from her work, her family or her decisions. It was the quiet foundation beneath them all. She believed in prayer, in dignity, in service, in forgiveness and in the sacred worth of every person.

Those values shaped her bedside manner, her leadership, her mothering and her friendships. She served not for recognition, but because love demanded action.

Legacy and Impact

Her influence continues in the people she formed.

Sr. Elizabeth’s legacy lives in every patient comforted, every nurse encouraged, every child strengthened, every family member held together by her wisdom and every life that learned dignity through her example.

She leaves behind more than memories. She leaves a pattern: serve faithfully, love deeply, lead humbly, pray continually and make every room more human because you entered it.
