Purpose
To set out how moderated community spaces operate, what conduct is not permitted, and how reports and escalations are handled.
Scope
Foundation-hosted community conversations, live sessions and comment spaces, and moderated member spaces on our partner platform Funeora.
Responsibilities
Moderators are responsible for day-to-day moderation and escalation. The Founder and Chief Executive Officer holds final accountability for safeguarding decisions.
How we expect people to speak
- Speak to others with dignity, even in disagreement.
- Protect other people's privacy — do not repeat what someone shared in confidence.
- Support, don't diagnose. Community members are not each other's clinicians.
- Respect facilitators, moderators and the boundaries of the space.
Not permitted
- Harassment, intimidation, threats or abuse.
- Hate speech, discrimination or incitement of any kind.
- Sexual content, grooming behaviour or any attempt to contact a minor.
- Sharing another person's identity, image, health information or private circumstances without consent.
- Fundraising, recruitment, scams, spam or commercial promotion without permission.
- Impersonating the Foundation, its leadership, a professional or another member.
- Content that encourages self-harm, suicide, violence or illegal activity.
Moderation actions
Depending on severity and history, moderators may edit or remove content, issue a warning, mute or restrict participation, remove a member from a space, or suspend or close an account. Serious safeguarding breaches result in immediate removal without warning.
Reporting
Anything that feels unsafe can be reported to a moderator in the space, or directly to info@eflegacy.org. We acknowledge every report within five working days and protect the identity of anyone reporting in good faith.
Crisis and safeguarding escalation
Where a message indicates risk to life or safety, or a child-protection concern, moderators escalate immediately to the responsible person and, where necessary, to professional, protection or emergency services. In an emergency in South Africa, contact 10111, or 112 from a mobile phone.
Appeals
A member who believes a moderation decision was wrong may appeal in writing to info@eflegacy.org. Appeals are reviewed by someone who did not make the original decision.
Records
Moderation records are kept securely, with limited role-based access, and are retained in line with our Data Retention & Deletion Policy.
Questions about this policy? Email info@eflegacy.org and a member of our team will respond within five working days.
